Michael Castro – Deputy Fire Chief Michael Castro has been a career firefighter with the Newton Fire Department since 1983. He rose within the Department and was promoted to Deputy Fire Chief in March of 2008.
Michael has held many positions within the Newton Fire Department during his career, including: Suppression; Training; Fire Prevention & Code Enforcement, and Emergency Management. He has also been involved in planning for public events, such as the Boston Marathon and 4th of July Fireworks Celebrations for the City of Newton.
Michael holds certifications as a Fire Inspector and Hazardous Materials Technician. He holds an Associate Degree of Science in Fire Protection and Safety Technology from Middlesex Community College of Lowell, MA.
He is a charter member of the Department of Fire Services, District Two Hazardous Materials Regional Response Team since 1990, and served as the Team Coordinator.
Michael Co-Authored the document which became the outline for the MA Regional Hazardous Materials Response Program, and was submitted as part of the initial Bond Bill request to the MA State legislature.
He coordinated the MA Annual Statewide Hazardous Materials Training Conference for members of the State teams for 24 years, and represented the Response Team Technicians as a voting member of the MA State Emergency Response Commission (SERC) for over 20 years.
Michael has participated in thousands of hours of hazardous materials training and many specialized hazardous materials training programs, such as CAMEO; Chemistry of Hazardous Materials (National Fire Academy); Hazardous Materials Instructor Training (IAFF); Railroad Tankcar Specialist Training (Pueblo ,CO).
He has responded to hundreds of hazardous materials incidents of all types during his career.
Michael retired from the Newton Fire Department in July, 2017.
